The Broad
A detailed study of the facade geometry and research on possible improvements.

PROJECTS
The Broad is a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and opened in September of 2015. During the exercise, the shape of the building’s front facade was optimized with the use of a genetic evolution algorithm, which gave 16% reduction of sun exposure compared to the flat facade. Perforation was adjusted to the final solar exposure map. The final model - Liquid - is a research project, that combines rapid robot prototyping with modeling thermoplastics. The spikes of the final model follow the curvature of the optimized facade.
